Laundry Room Makeover

This past fall, I had the pleasure of helping some friends of ours redesign their laundry room and den in their new(ish) house. The truth is, it's an old house that they have lived in for about three years. However, being that they have four children and that they both work full-time jobs, they haven't really done anything with these two rooms since they moved in. These have become more "catch-all" rooms for the family's ever-growing collection of things that tend to pile up when you are too busy with the rest of life.
For now, I will just be showing you the finished laundry room, and pictures of the den will be coming along soon. Walking into this laundry room for the first time, it was a room that you clearly wanted to spend as little time in as possible. The clutter of tools, paint, cleaning supplies, and who-knows-what-else was overwhelming. It was such a blessing to me to be able to simplify this area of their life for them. And as everyone knows, if you MUST to do a chore like laundry, you should at least be able to do it in a beautiful room.

Above you'll see the before and after of one corner of the laundry room- yes, that's the same corner. We painted, put down some clean new vinyl tile on the floors, and the homeowners definitely purged a lot of unnecessary things that were placed in this room.

I love that the husband is the spouse in this family who handles the laundry. The entire redo was his idea. He really needed some space to hang the blouses, dresses and delicates of his wife and FOUR daughters. As we progressed with the project, both he and his wife decided to put storage space as the priority of the room so we needed to add as much shelving as we could.

Above is the far wall of the laundry room before and below you will see the after picture. The cabinets were thrown away and we opted for open shelving for easy access. Rotating the washer helped make the space less awkward and the rolling cart from IKEA was a great added item for cleaning supplies.

The sliding door below is a great statement piece for the den and it closes off the laundry room when company is over. We were all very happy with the finished project and it will hopefully give much more functionality for this busy family.
